Student Poll Worker Program

California Elections Code 12302 allows eligible high school students to serve as Poll Workers on Election Day. As future leaders of our communities, high school students benefit greatly from this opportunity to gain a greater awareness of the election process and voter rights. This program will also enable high school students to learn more about the importance of participating in elections and provide an opportunity to give back to their community.

WHAT TO EXPECT

As a Student Poll Worker, you will be assigned to one of Placer County’s many polling places and be part of the team that makes Election Day happen. Precinct boards typically include an Inspector, a Judge and 3 to 5 Clerks or Student Clerks. You will report to and take direction from your assigned Inspector and/or Judge. you and your precinct board will be supported by the dedicated Elections Office staff providing remote assistance from the Elections Office, and field support staff providing in person assistance at the polls.

Student Poll Worker responsibilities may include: Assisting with opening and setting up the polling place, assisting with setting up voting equipment, greeting, assisting, and processing voters throughout the day, answering voter questions, and assisting with closing procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS

To serve as a Student Poll Worker you must:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident.
  • Be at least 16 years old on or before Election Day.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale.)
  • Have written permission from your parent/guardian and your school.
  • Attend a mandatory training prior to Election Day.
  • Be available to work from 6:00 a.m. to approximately 9:00 p.m. on Election Day.

Are you Bilingual?

Placer County is currently seeking Poll Workers who are fluent in English and any of the following languages:

  • Spanish
  • Tagalog
  • Korean
  • Punjabi

Bilingual Poll Workers are integral to ensuring language accessibly throughout Placer County polling places. As a bilingual Poll Worker, you will be readily available to greet, assist and translate election materials in your language to any voter who requires language assistance.

Be sure to indicate what other language(s) you speak on your application!

TRAINING

Student Poll Workers are required to attend a mandatory in-person training. Training will last approximately 3 hours. You will not be placed to work if you do not complete your training class.

Poll Worker training will cover: the rights of voters, proper setup and operation of voting equipment, processing of voters, (including standard, vote-by-mail, and provisional voters), language and accessibility resources, custody procedures for voted ballots and other election materials, new health and safety procedures, and other essential topics.
